The nature of hydrogen bonds in Cytidine···H+···Cytidine DNA base pairs

12 March 2012. A team led by Harald Schwalbe, CEF Speaker and Professor at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Chemical Biology at the Goethe University Frankfurt used combined NMR spectroscopic and quantum chemical investigations to characterize cationic hydrogen bonds found in C⋅C+ base pairs in DNA i-motif structures. The study published in the journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition showed that the proton involved in the singly protonated base pair jumps between both cytidine nucleobases. The proton transfer can be described as asymmetric double-well potential with a proton hopping rate of at least 108 s−1. More ...
