Set up in 2007 by the EU, the European Research Council is the first pan-European funding organisation for frontier research. It aims to stimulate scientific excellence in Europe by encouraging competition for funding between the very best, creative researchers of any nationality and age. The ERC funds with its starting grants young, early-career top researchers. The substantial funding is awarded based on peer review evaluation. Sole criterium for the selection of successful applications is scientific excellence.

Martin Vabulas will receive 1.37 million Euro over the next 5 years to study the metastability of proteins during tumor metastasis. Michael Potente, whose research is devoted to the analysis of the transcriptional circuits governing the growth, maintenance and regression of blood vessels in development and disease, will receive 1.5 million Euro to expand his research programme. His long-term goal is to map essential genetic regulatory circuits of blood vessel formation and function to illuminate novel therapeutic targets, which might overcome the current limitations of pro- and anti-angiogenic medicine.
