BMLS tours well received

June 2014.

The Buchmann Institute for Molecular Life Sciences opened its doors to the general public as part of the University's Open Sunday on 1 June 2014. The guided tours through the institute proved so popular that the number of tours had to be increased to allow all interested visitors so see BMLS's state of the art laboratories, including an introduction to the electron microscopes, light microscopes, cell culture laboratories and optogenetics experiments.

During the tours visitors had a chance to talk directly to the scientists about their experiments and many questions were asked ranging from technical details to opportunities for interested students.  All involved were very pleased with the success of this first open day of the institute. Visitors learned about the founding of BMLS as part of CEF and received an introduction into the ongoing research. The international and highly interdisciplinary institute currently hosts thirteen research groups and around 160 scientists from nineteen nationalities.

The event formed part of the Week of Science on Riedberg Campus from 1-6 June 2014,  part of the Goethe University’s programme to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The day started with a wonderful sunny morning and the opening of the University’s new science garden. This was followed by a varied programme of activities, including seminars, exhibitions, tours, live music and activities for all ages at the different departments and institutes located on the Riedberg.
