Ernst Bamberg awarded Wissenschaftspreis
The CEF congratulates Ernst Bamberg on receiving the biannual scientific research award of the "Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft". Arend Oetker, the President of the Stifterverband, presented the award to Ernst Bamberg on 18 June 2009 in Mainz. The prestigious award was presented in recognition of Ernst Bamberg's fundamental research into the discovery and characterisation of light activated ion channels called "channelrhodopsins". The discovery of channelrhodopsins holds great potential for the field of neurobiology and the development of new medical treatments. The possibility of expressing channelrhodopsin in different neurones and controlling the cell's depolarisation by light has led to the foundation of a new field of research called "Optogenetics".
