Better imaging through chemistry

December 2014. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2014 has been awarded jointly to William E. Moerner, Stefan W. Hell, and Eric Betzig ‘‘for the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy.’’ In the recent issue of the journal Cell, Ernst Stelzer discusses the contributions made by this year’s awardees and how advances in understanding the behavior of fluorophores and research in light microscopy converged to allow the improved visualization of biological structures. Ernst Stelzer has been involved in the development of modern microscopy since the early 1980s. Stefan Hell was a postdoc in his laboratory from December 1990 until August 1993. They co-authored ten publications.
