Achilleas Frangakis awarded ERC Proof of Concept grant
October 2015. ERC Proof of Concept grants can be used to establish intellectual property rights, investigate business opportunities or conduct technical validation. With the grant just awarded to him by the ERC, Achilleas Frangakis aims to advance Super-Sampling SART from a state-of-the-art research tool to an innovative commercial software product. Super-Sampling SART is a highly flexible multi-purpose three-dimensional tomographic reconstruction algorithm developed by the Frangakis group at the Buchmann Institute of Molecular Life Sciences, Goethe University Frankfurt. The new project will start in January 2016 and run for 1.5 years.
The new algorithm is applicable to a multitude of applications including scientific as well as industrial uses. It offers crucial advantages for multi-dimensional image visualization and interpretation, in particular for quantitative information extraction.The implementation of Super-Sampling SART by Achilleas Frangakis and Michael Kunz in his group has already demonstrated its superior image reconstruction capabilities for incomplete and low signal-to-noise ratio electron tomography and X-ray microscopy data compared to the established reconstruction algorithms. In addition, the reconstruction time is reduced by 50% to 90% compared to other reconstruction methods.
The group aims to bridge different fields using tomography as their common technique and to benchmark their implementation using the current widespread and diverse medical and industrial computed tomography, industrial safety scanning and natural sciences tomography-based data. All of these data share similar characteristics and the same fundamental challenges. The team also plans to bring the implementation from an academic to an industrial level by creating a user interface, optimizing its documentation and usability, and by approaching the target market.
